Post by NeonNocturnal on Tue Sep 03, 2013 8:15 am

6th May - 8th May - 10th May

This is the official Eurovision Assemble thread for Eurovision 2014 discussions. Here you must discuss the contest rules, hosting and entries. If you want to talk about national finals, please talk about that in the relevant threads or start one, as we don't want this thread to become too clogged.

So "join us" in discussing this years Eurovision Song Contest.

To be honest, I am happy that Copenhagen was chosen as the host city. Smaller cities have their benefits, but there is just something about it being in the Capital city that makes me happy. I guess it is much easier to accommodate and travel to. Where did everyone else hope 2014 to be hosted?

"Join Us" is a pretty lazy slogan, imo. How much did they pay the agency who came up with it?

Apparently DR are scrapping the postcards. http://escxtra.com/2013/09/dr-to-do-away-with-postcards/

The postcards are one of my favourite parts of the contest (and the butterflies in Malmö were probably my favourite postcards ever). Sad Sad

I don't think the postcards thing sounds like a big deal, really? I mean, they're still going to be personalized clips related to each entry. Every host approaches them differently.

Yeah, I think the word "scrapping" makes it sound more dramatic than it actually is. As does anything along the lines of "getting rid of the post-cards".
I think what they mean is, they're going to be approaching it the same way Sweden did, they won't be advertising the country, they will be advertising the artist.

The motto for this year really creeps me out. Then again, when I see it, it conjures images of the Eurovision community as something like The Horde out of The Returned

crying out 'Join Us'.

So yeah, that might have something to do with it...

Ohhhh. I seeee. As long as there's still a nicely-made 'trailer' before each song, imaginatively produced (not like Baku.. Mad ), then I'm happy!

I really don't like the slogan. Hopefully they're saving their creativity for the show itself.

I love the venue they chose. It looks a little abandoned but I think they can a lot with all that space.

The Australian commentators for this years Eurovision made fun of how many times the Caspian Sea was used in the Azerbaijan postcards in comparison to the postcards for this year. I actually really liked them focusing on the artists but I really loved seeing all the Azerbaijan scenery so I'm torn on the issue.

I don't really like "Join Us" either. It's too simple and the amount of people saying it next year in interviews and other media will annoy me. I could make a drinking game out of it though...

I've spent hours upon hours trying to find where I'd be able to see the show with AUS commentary. I don't suppose you know a place I could download it or see it in full, do you?

So they went with the warehouse venue? I was hoping for that one since it's closest to the airport Smile

Oh gosh, I have no idea. You could try the SBS Eurovision site but it might be country locked (and I have no idea where it is on there). I love our commentators, we used to have the British one and that guy was such a downer.

Terry indeed. We got our own commentators in '09 or '10 and they also run around backstage being idiots, very entertaining those two.

I watch the clips they do for the website. Love them, wish I could watch the show with their commentary. I'm always astounded by how much of the culture they research too. It's much more effort than goes into the BBC's coverage.

They do a show before it Eurovision starts about the place it is being held at. This year Julia went through Poland, the Baltics, Finland and Sweden to get to Malmo and introduced a lot of history. Hopefully you can watch their commentary as I highly recommend them. We're pretty lucky to have such great commentators.

Conchita Wurst for Austria. Personally, I am happy with the decision. I love her voice, and was disappointed when she didn't win the NF in 2012. What do you all think?

I love their decision. I was really hoping that she would represent Austria last year, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. 2014 is going to be exciting!

Awesome. I just hope she gets a good song, because I think (based on some of her other performances I watched on Youtube) she can do better vocally than her 2012 NF song, but she already seems like a great performer and generally someone fun to have at Eurovision, so I'm optimistic!

I also love the fact that, in the event of having to switch to internal selection for whatever reason, they chose somebody who had attempted to represent them before and is clearly enthusiastic about Eurovision. Most internally selected artists probably hadn't considered it until they got the offer.

Have you seen her rendition of "My Heart Will Go On"? It gave me chills and the audience's reaction was amazing.

I'm not sure about the choice just yet. I fear a gimmick, especially with the stuff going on with Russia. Broadcasters will want to bee seen as on the right side of the battle, but at what cost?

This year marks the longest gap the UK has had between victories. Pretty embarrassing for the current delegation, considering we were once an ESC power-house.
