National Finals
What national finals are you looking forwards to during this Eurovision season?
Do you have a favorite one that you like watching?

Re: National Finals
I think this year I've finally gotten over my whole "wah National Finals break my heart the song I want to go through never wins wah wah wah" phase and this year I'm determined to watch as many as possible.
I'm probably most pumped about MelFest cause this'll be my first year where I intend to follow all the rounds of it. I'm also excited for the Belarussian NF as soon as we hear of their confirmation. Really glad Russia's NF is in December... I'll be back with more countries I'm looking forward to watch as soon as more countries confirm. When's the deadline for that?

Re: National Finals
I would always watch MF, but it gets tiring having the stream constantly rebuffer (hurray for living in the US). I now have to watch it the day after.*Alex wrote:I think this year I've finally gotten over my whole "wah National Finals break my heart the song I want to go through never wins wah wah wah" phase and this year I'm determined to watch as many as possible.

I'm pretty jazzed for Eesti Laul, Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, and the German selection.
Re: National Finals
Obviously Russia and Belarus, since we're probably going to get news about them soonest.
Lithuania was the first one I watched a couple of years ago. I'm going to watch theirs (or at least keep track of what is qualifying and how, so I can be either reassured or resigned) from the quarterfinals onward. So you don't have to.
I watched Albania for the first time last year, and it was interminable and anticlimactic, but I thought they had a few artists with great potential in their selection. I'll turn it off after all the entries have been performed and wait for news with cautious optimism this time.
Germany and Finland could be fun. Let's just hope they have more triumphant outcomes than this year. I actually missed some of the biggest "fan favorites" (most notably MF and Eesti Laul) because I was so burnt out on NFs in the same way Alex describes, but I'm going to similarly steel myself to watch as many as possible and see if it holds up in reality.

Re: National Finals
MF was really rubbish. Dansk Melod Grand Prix was a sly old dog! I watched it last week and was shocked at how good it was and how little people talked about it.
The German final is amazing, regardless of the esc result! Melodifestivalen was a huge dump of disappointment and ridiculous results. Eddie Razaz not being in the final... Robin winning...

Re: National Finals
I think the thing with DMGP was because it was so early and because Denmark is a generally unassuming country in the contest it went under the radar. I quite liked the three presenter ladies but I tuned in right around the end when they chose the song.
Re: National Finals
The staging was really nice. Hell, I love all of their staging throughout the years (2010-present).
Re: National Finals
I love watching the Icelandic NF. They're generally efficient and concise with it, no waffling on for hours.
Does anyone else like watching the NFs for the exposure to the languages?

Re: National Finals
The last few years I've only properly watched Melodifestivalen. It's such a brilliant show and super funny too. They show it on Finnish television so buffering is not a thing. > I quite enjoy the language and the artists. And the jokes. I just love Sweden okay.
As for our own little (okay maybe not so little...) Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu, I'm not a big fan. Most of the entries are usually bad/unsuitable for ESC and the show is boring. But maybe I feel this way because a) Mello is perfect and b) I want our entry to be perfect so that we win again. If you watch UMK and don't understand Finnish, don't worry. You're not missing anything grand.
Maybe this season I'll watch more NF's provided I have time. Could be entertaining.

Re: National Finals
I actually never watched a NF yet. I heard all the entries in Eesti Laul but never ended up watching it. I wish some countries that do internal would do a NF, mainly just Georgia because Georgian music is amazing. I've heard the German NF is really good so I might watch that.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me to keep an eye on? I doubt I could watch them all but I would gladly appreciate any help choosing which ones to watch.

Re: National Finals
Melodifestivalen (Sweden) is a good shout. I *think* it's regarded as the best production out of all the NFs. The Swedes take it seriously. Another good one is Denmark.bondjure wrote:I actually never watched a NF yet. I heard all the entries in Eesti Laul but never ended up watching it. Re: National Finals
I think the ones to watch will be;
-Sweden, if you want to see an NF done right and how good they can become, this is your go to place. Plus it's arguably the biggest show on Swedish TV.
-Germany, the current delegation is extremely enthusiastic and everyone has their eye on them, I believe given the right ideas and funding, Germany could surpass Sweden in terms of NF quality. They're trying things out so it's an interesting thing to see the rise of a delegation.
- Denmark, simply because they're hosts and most Nordic NF's are great in quality. The fact DR said they wanted to win again is very ballsy and will be interesting to see if they keep their promise.

Re: National Finals
I only managed to catch a few minutes of the end of Sanremo this year. This year I think I'll commit myself to Sanremo and Melodifestivalen, but I want to catch a lot more. Are there any good ones from the Balkans/Southern Europe?
Re: National Finals
These are the ones I look forward to. I will watch ALL the national finals. (and hopefully be at melfest)NeonNocturnal wrote:Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Estonia.

Unpopular opinion: I like the Maltese NF.

Thanks, I would like to see who Denmark sends! I'll watch Melodifestivalen since it's so big. Thanks again!CaledonianBlues wrote:Melodifestivalen (Sweden) is a good shout. Re: National Finals
I know some people watch Serbia, and there's a rumor that Bulgaria will have one. I'd be interested in Slovenia if they bring theirs back.Kimyasimya wrote:I only managed to catch a few minutes of the end of Sanremo this year. The Icelandic one is waaaaay up there with my favourites, because there always seems to be lots of good quality songs. Although the fact that they're all in Icelandic is a huge plus for me too. Brilliant language, so it is.CaledonianBlues wrote:I love watching the Icelandic NF. They're generally efficient and concise with it, no waffling on for hours.

Re: National Finals
we live in the same city you really don't have a choice in the matter with respect to MelFest sorry bout itKimyasimya wrote:I only managed to catch a few minutes of the end of Sanremo this year. I'd say Beovizija (Serbia's NF), but that may just be my gigantic bias. Hopefully FYROM will have Tijana performing a few songs for the public to vote. I've heard the Albanian one's a drag.
I seriously doubt Slovenia's even coming back this year but we'll see.pinkchiffon wrote:I know some people watch Serbia, and there's a rumor that Bulgaria will have one. Don't worry, I look forward to MF - I'll be holding you to it (and preferably Sanremo too, but with Italy I've found that you really just never know)*Alex wrote:we live in the same city you really don't have a choice in the matter with respect to MelFest sorry bout itKimyasimya wrote:I only managed to catch a few minutes of the end of Sanremo this year. Re: National Finals
Sanremo's a big week long debacle we're best off just watching the last two shows, cause Italy may pick from the Newcomers section or they'll go for someone better known, and if it's someone I recognize and like I will probably cry from happiness.Kimyasimya wrote:Don't worry, I look forward to MF - I'll be holding you to it (and preferably Sanremo too, but with Italy I've found that you really just never know)*Alex wrote:we live in the same city you really don't have a choice in the matter with respect to MelFest sorry bout itKimyasimya wrote:I only managed to catch a few minutes of the end of Sanremo this year. Re: National Finals
I figured as much... but, sadly, I desperately need to practise my Italian and stay in touch with at least some Italian music/culture... I'd be disappointed if I missed it.*Alex wrote:Sanremo's a big week long debacle we're best off just watching the last two shows, cause Italy may pick from the Newcomers section or they'll go for someone better known, and if it's someone I recognize and like I will probably cry from happiness.
Also I never really thought much of countries like Estonia or Iceland or Malta but they're pretty serious contenders and have a serious following, and I think I might tune in to one of their NFs to see what they're about.
